Hospitality Internship in Nepal

Due to the immense growth, the hospitality and tourism industry has witnessed in recent years, with tourism numbers soaring higher and new hospitality establishments (such as hotels) opening their doors all over the world, jobs in this sector have become more diverse, and employment opportunities are on the increase.

Program Overview

The hospitality industry has seen an explosive boom in recent years, with millions of travelers flying across the world and new hospitality establishments opening worldwide. Our hospitality internship will provide the most comprehensive global career opportunity by allowing students to work with Nepali hotels, resorts, and homestays in various capacities, including bookings and reservations, concierge services, restaurant services, accounting, housekeeping, and trip planning. Students will receive world-class coaching in various areas of hospitality. Interns may even have the opportunity to assist in growing local start-ups to receive a comprehensive entrepreneurial experience.

Internship Requirement

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from college, or equivalent experience
  • Interest in customer service and a desire to learn about local cultural activities, events, and festivals

Program Itinerary

Week 1

You will be picked up by our representative and driven to the hotel from the sole international airport in Kathmandu. The first week will be spent adjusting to the new culture as well as adapting to the new work environment.

  • Arrival and transport to hotel
  • Orientation: Culture, History and Nepali language class
  • Walking tour in the heart of the city
  • Meet the project supervisor
  • Familiarize with public transit with one of our program coordinator

Week 2

Interns will rotate through various sectors of hospitality throughout the remaining weeks. During week 2, interns will work in the culinary department. The responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing catering events
  • Assisting in banquets or a la carte serving
  • Working as a trainee chef or baker
  • If of age, bartending
  • Keeping inventory of stock

Week 3

Depending on their internship requirements and the available internship positions in our partner companies, prospective interns may work in any of the following (or other) disciplines during their hospitality internship with GAP Year Nepal.

Week 4

In the final week, students may choose an area of concentration. In addition to the culinary and lodging divisions, students may also elect to work in the finances and management division. Students who choose this path will have the opportunity to work closely with the Human Resources team to ensure the accuracy and punctuality of payrolls, learn about sales and marketing, and assist in making financial decisions. Some responsibilities may include:

  • Setting budgets
  • Analyze financial information
  • Assist in recruitment, training, and employee relations
  • Coordination and implementation of promotional events
  • Generate new business by distributing promotional material, maintaining guest databases, and more
